Data Access

It is our intention to facilitate open and timely access to the CHAMPS Network surveillance data without compromising the integrity of our guiding principles or the privacy of the individuals who have consented to participate. The terms, conditions, timing, and content of data openly shared or disseminated by the CHAMPS Program Office to persons/entities are governed by the policies and procedures established by the CHAMPS Data Access Working Group and CHAMPS Network Governance Committee. These conditions are provided below. At this time, only curated standard data sets (case demographics [including MITS measurements], verbal autopsy, DeCoDe results, TAC results, and lab results) may be requested here.

Data Access Conditions

The following are conditions for accessing CHAMPS datasets. Individual sites and respective country agencies retain the right to share and utilize data. Currently, only summarized and case level de-identified data are available. Please check back periodically for updates on availability of additional data sets.

  • Summarized Data

    Available on the CHAMPS website

  • De-Identified Data

    Register and Request Data

A curated standard data set is available following registration and electronic acceptance of a Data Transfer Agreement (DTA)

    • Standard data set includes: case demographics (including MITS measurements), verbal autopsy, DeCoDe results, TAC results, and lab results
    • Additional curated standard data sets in development
    • Data transformations performed to de-identify this data set: Site identifiers removed; case identifiers replaced with surrogates; dates shifted; narrative/summary fields removed

To view documentation for the de-identified data set prior to downloading, obtain descriptive metadata or the citation for the data set, please visit the CHAMPS Dataverse at the following link, and scroll to the bottom of the page: https://doi.org/10.15139/S3/GKH2QD

  • Limited Data Set

    Register and Request Data
A CHAMPS staff member will contact you to provide further instructions and a Data Use Agreement for your review and signature.

A curated limited data set is available following registration and execution of a Data Use Agreement (DUA). The delivery time for this data set is dependent on DUA execution, and is estimated at 4-8 weeks.

    • Standard limited data set includes: case demographics (including MITS measurements), verbal autopsy, DeCoDe results, TAC results, and lab results
    • Additional curated limited data sets in development
    • Data transformations performed to created this limited data set: Case identifiers replaced with surrogates; narrative/summary fields removed

To view documentation for the limited data set prior to downloading, obtain descriptive metadata or the citation for the data set, please visit the CHAMPS Dataverse at the following link, and scroll to the bottom of the page: https://doi.org/10.15139/S3/PMAAWG

  • Potentially Identifiable Data Set

    Register and Request Data
A CHAMPS staff member will contact you about your request and provide further instructions.

A potentially identifying data set is available following registration, execution of a Data Use Agreement (DUA), and IRB approval. Timing is dependent on IRB approval and DUA execution, and is estimated at 3-6 months.

    • Privacy Constraints: Dependent on IRB approval - may include case photos, geo-location coordinates, free-text and narrative fields

*Any external findings or results that are generated from the use of CHAMPS data should be made publicly available.

Data Access Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

In addition to current standard data sets, what types of data will be available in the future?

See below for a complete list of CHAMPS data types:

How current is the data?

Data is updated on a monthly basis.

What if I need help interpreting the data?

Is the data free or are there other obligations attached to use?

CHAMPS data is intended to be a public good. To further accelerate the global reduction in U5 mortality rates, any external findings or results that are generated from the use of CHAMPS data should be made publicly available following the guidelines here

We request the opportunity to review manuscripts presenting analyses of CHAMPS data prior to submission for publication, so we can ensure that the data are understood and used appropriately. Please contact data@champshealth.org to share pre-submitted manuscripts with the CHAMPS Program Office.
