Mary Amuyunzu-Nyamongo, PhD
Founding Director and Technical Advisor for the African Institute for Health and Development (AIHD)
Mary Amuyunzu-Nyamongo is the Founding Director and Technical Adviser for the African Institute for Health and Development (AIHD), an organization based in Nairobi, Kenya that conducts research, training and advocacy on health and development issues. Prior to establishing the AIHD in 2004, Mary worked in various organizations including the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF, Africa), the Population Council, and the African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC). She is widely published in the areas of health and development, focusing on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), HIV/AIDS, gender, youth, mothers and children under-five, rural and urban poverty, and health promotion in general.
Mary serves on various international committees and boards, including the World Health Organization (WHO), International Food and Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), and the Mectizan Donation Program (MDP). She is currently consulting for the World Bank as a social development specialist and holds a position as an Adjunct Faculty Member at Strathmore University, Nairobi. Mary holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from Cambridge University in the UK, and a BA, Hons, in Social Anthropology from the University of Nairobi, Kenya.
