Case Study: Addressing Neonatal Nosocomial Infections in a Bangladeshi Hospital Facility
June 21, 2022
CHAMPS has published a new case study led by researchers at the CHAMPS Bangladesh site. In this case study, members of the CHAMPS team in Bangladesh identified a series of nosocomial, or hospital-acquired, infections that were contributing to neonatal deaths in a Special Care Newborn Unit of a local hospital facility.
Swab assessments were conducted on various sites throughout the hospital including, baby beds, wash stations, and even the hands of nurses. When analyzed, these swabs revealed the primary bacteria found in the hospital and the locations they were most likely to be found. Through staff trainings and improved hygiene practices, the team was able to help mitigate infections caused by these bacteria. Future trainings provided at other locations, with the support of national health representatives in Bangladesh, will help to prevent further neonatal death and illness in newborns.
