CHAMPS has begun mortality surveillance activities at sites in Manhiça, Mozambique and Soweto, South Africa, advancing our goal of illuminating the causes of neonatal and under-five mortality. These activities include innovative laboratory and diagnostic techniques, as well as extensive engagement with local communities.

Findings from scientific analyses are combined with clinical data, parental interviews and other information. This data is communicated to parents and then, in an open and timely manner, to a range of stakeholders on the local, national and international levels.  Helping turn data into lifesaving action is the hallmark of CHAMPS’ work – findings from sites will inform health decisions and research across the globe for years to come.

National ownership and use of data for policy and action are critical to CHAMPS’ vision of building and sharing knowledge to save children’s lives. We are working with the National Institute of Health in Mozambique and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases in South Africa to facilitate and catalyze both immediate and long-term use of data for action.

In addition to Mozambique and South Africa, CHAMPS is developing global health surveillance activities at sites in Mali, Kenya, Ethiopia and Bangladesh.
