Mozambique – CHAMPS Health

Mozambique

CHAMPS operates in Mozambique’s Manhiça District and Quelimane, two regions with high child mortality rates. In Mozambique at least 79 out of every 1,000 children die before their fifth birthday. While child mortality has declined, diseases like malaria, diarrheal diseases, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and other respiratory infections remain prevalent, and maternal and child health interventions are still lagging. CHAMPS sites in Manhiça and Quelimane were established by Manhiça Health Research Center (CISM), a joint collaboration with the Mozambican Ministry of Health, Eduardo Mondlane University, Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), and the National Institute of Public Health (INS). CISM supports the Manhiça District Hospital and Central Hospital of Quelimane, where CHAMPS conducts mortality surveillance and uses Minimally Invasive Tissue Sampling (MITS) to gather crucial data. Through these efforts, we aim to improve health outcomes and create a hopeful future for vulnerable children in Mozambique.
