Sierra Leone will join other African and South Asian countries as the newest site, bringing CHAMPS’ life-saving effort to new partners in West Africa.  

Sierra Leone joins CHAMPS as the seventh site, adding new West African partners to the global CHAMPS network of over 100+ partners. Sierra Leone has some of the highest rates of child mortality in the world, and as a CHAMPS site will have access to life saving data and resources to address this dire public health challenge.

 
Children in low-resource countries are dying at an alarming rate. Sadly, that’s no different in Sierra Leone. With a population of more than seven million, the under-five mortality rate in this West African country is one of the highest, at 115 deaths per 1000 live births. Quality data are urgently needed to inform evidence-based policies that can prevent death, and give each child the opportunity to live and thrive beyond the age of five. CHAMPS is working with our partners at the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Crown Agents, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Public Health Informatics Institute, and the International Association of National Public Health Institutes, to make this life-saving effort a reality for this community and families.

And now, along with: Soweto, South Africa; Manhiça, Mozambique; Kisumu, Kenya; Harar, Ethiopia; Baliakandi, Bangladesh; and Bamako, Mali; our network will collect and share data to help save young lives in Makeni, Sierra Leone, too.
