CHAMPS Bangladesh Pioneers AI Literacy to Transform Healthcare in Lower-Middle Income Countries

On April 23, 2026, Faridpur Medical College (FMC), in collaboration with the expert team from CHAMPS, hosted an integrated teaching session focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medical education and healthcare at the FMC Auditorium. Faridpur Medical College Hospital is one of the CHAMPS surveillance facilities in Bangladesh. A total of 384 participants attended the session, including 56 faculty members and 328 students from various years of the medical school. The event aimed to build foundational AI literacy among medical students and faculty, equipping them to utilize AI’s transformative potential, critically assess AI tools, and understand the ethical implications of AI in healthcare.

Dr. Rajib Biswas, from CHAMPS Bangladesh, delivered a keynote address covering the evolution of AI, from its origins in mechanical reasoning to modern breakthroughs like AlphaFold. The address also touched on important ethical concerns such as AI hallucinations and data privacy, alongside practical experiences of AI usage in CHAMPS’ Verbal Autopsy narratives, which help better understand death events from the perspectives of family members.

Following the keynote, Dr. Md. Sabbit Khan and Dr. Taukir Tanjim from the CHAMPS team conducted a hands-on training session, where participants engaged with various AI tools applicable to teaching, education, and research, such as NotebookLM, Claude Skills, and other medical-specific applications. The session concluded with closing remarks from Professor Dr. Dilruba Zeba, Principal of FMC, who emphasized the importance of such training in the current medical landscape and facilitated an interactive Q&A session.

The event was highly appreciated by both faculty and medical students, who expressed a strong need for ongoing AI training in medicine. Key takeaways included the desire for more AI-focused sessions, collaboration between FMC and CHAMPS, and opportunities for research at the intersection of AI and clinical medicine. CHAMPS also expressed its commitment to sharing its data and expertise with healthcare providers to improve the quality of care. CHAMPS Bangladesh is working on utilizing AI to identify the precise cause of death through clinical documents and Verbal Autopsy data. This initiative represents the concept of “Data to Action,” where CHAMPS is working for improving the quality of care through healthcare providers to make more accurate decisions, enhance patient care, and contribute to the positive transformation of healthcare services. By linking medical records with clinical histories, AI would be a potential tool for healthcare providers to save time and enhance the accuracy of their decisions.
